3.1.2 Monitoring of Desert Locusts in Somalia

This part analyzed the invasion path, migration and dispersal time, and spatial distribution of desert locusts in Somalia. It carried out time-series remote sensing monitoring of desert locusts infestation in Somalia. The specific monitoring results are as follows.

From June to September 2019, desert locusts migrated from Yemen to northern Somalia. They reproduced locally, with some swarms migrating northwest to eastern Ethiopia, damaging a total of 506.0 thousand hectares of vegetation, including 5.5 thousand hectares of farmland, 40.1 thousand hectares of grassland, and 460.4 thousand hectares of shrub, accounting for 5.7%, 1.0%, and 1.0% of the total area of farmland, grassland, and shrub in the country, respectively. The mainly affected areas were in northern Somalia. North-West had the most infested area with 174.2 thousand hectares; Sanaag came second with 134.9 thousand hectares; Bari ranked third with 90.4 thousand hectares. Moreover, in the northwest region, Awdal and Togdheer, the affected areas were 81.5 thousand hectares and 25.0 thousand hectares, respectively. The monthly remote sensing monitoring results of the damaged area of desert locusts from June to September 2019 in Somalia are shown in Figs. 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5.
